Artist's Statement:

Creating art is an activity that unifies dualistic perspectives of life. Within the process I find a balance in emotional ambiguities. Art, with a capital 'A', in my mind, needs no justification for its existence. It bows down before no opinion. It calls forth the most devoted, vigilant and compassionate discipline in its creation, at the same time it demands that the artist stand out of the way to let it happen. The act of creation brings one into direct communion with the Creator. This sweet spot satisfies my soul. Art has no reason to be. It is because of the process, that sacred relation with creation. Even so, in its presence, the vibrations, the emotions, the feelings it brings forth are valuable. It serves as a bridge or a vehicle, back to the realms from which it came. It serves to catalyze and awaken consciousness.

At its best, it reminds us that we are all artists; we are all part of the greater Creator and each expression of our consciousness - matters. My porcelain sculptures bring joy, both in the creation and in people's response. The elemental nature of the porcelain clay is ideal for my character type, my dosha. The simple act of having my hands in the mud soothes my soul. Watching the sensual, graceful forms emerge thrills me. Seeing people's response, often an awe inspired absorption, as they coo over their beauty, makes me happy. The figures are inspired by the American Deco style of the 20's. What I love about Deco is Zen. It's the elegance in simplicity; the starkness of sensuality, the strength and power in flowing, graceful lines.

My painting and collage work have been involved with yantras, visual meditation devices similar to mandalas. During their creation I explore how simple colors and geometric shapes represent, contain, collect and disperse forms of energy. This comes from a decades long interest in Indian and Tibetan Tantra, forms distinct from the western obsession with sexualized spirituality.

After working with Woodworvik Chaimongkol, (Woody Charcoal, a former Thai Monk) I began using the process of painting realism to explore the mental and emotional factors that affect creating and representing reality. It's an extension of nearly 20 years of Insight Meditation practice. Through it I dabble in semiotics and in communicating with the discarnate.
